What to Do When a Squirrel Is in Your House

What to Do When a Squirrel Is in Your House: A Guide by Gold Country Wildlife Control

It's June 4, and gray squirrel mating activity is in full swing in Nevada County and El Dorado County, meaning these critters will soon be looking for birthing areas and this often means your attic and ceiling space.  During this season it's common that a squirrel accidentally ends up in the living room! Here’s what to do if you find a squirrel in your home:

  1. Remove Pets: Keep pets away from the area to avoid stress and potential harm to both your pets and the squirrel.

  2. Open Escape Routes: Open doors and windows to create a clear exit path for the squirrel. Close off other rooms to guide it out. If there is a large gap under your door, be sure to place a towel to ensure it can not get under.

  3. Stay Away: You do not want to come in contact with the squirrel.  Try moving the squirrel with a spray bottle of water and a long stick to gently prod her toward the exit.

Squirrel Prevention Inspection:

After removing the squirrel, it's crucial to conduct a post-removal inspection. Male squirrels may have bred in the area, and they could be searching for the same entry points. Additionally, the pheromones left behind by the female squirrel can attract other squirrels, leading to future issues. We will identify and seal any potential entry points to ensure that your home remains squirrel-free. We will determine how a squirrel got in the house and see if squirrels are in the attic.

When to Call a Professional:

If the squirrel is stubborn or refuses to leave, it’s time to call the experts. Gold Country Wildlife Control has the equipment and expertise to safely remove the squirrel from inside your house. Our team will conduct a thorough inspection to determine how the squirrel got in and provide a quote to seal entry points, preventing future intrusions.

Keep in mind, that by mid July Western Gray Squirrels in California will give birth, and due diligence needs to be performed to prevent sealing a mother away from her litter.
